‘It’s Fun Pretending to Be Cool’

The actor, 43, returns Jan. 17 as Deputy U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens for season three of FX’s Justified (10 p.m. ET). Season two will be on DVD Tuesday.

Raylan is a tough guy, known for his unblinking stare. Are people intimidated by you?
I’d like them to be, but they’re usually not. I have a number of ways of telling my children how I can have them arrested. It seems to work.

The show is set in Kentucky but shot in California. Have you gotten any feedback from southerners?
I don’t feel like I run into too many people from Kentucky. I think I’m hanging around in the wrong places.

Will the body count be higher this season than last?
It might be. We’re surely off to the races in the first episode. My guess is a little more blood gets shed this year.

Are you a good shot in real life?
Anything within five feet, I’ve got it.

What’s your favorite part about playing Raylan?
Well, he doesn’t have to run. I appreciate that I don’t have to do any physical exercise. It’s fun pretending to be cool.

    GQ Magazine – December 2011

The most stylish man on television isn’t a mid-century ad exec or a depression-era bootlegger. As a wily U.S. marshal on Justified, no one has more swagger than Timothy Olyphant. Keep your man crush in check.

Shortly after this year’s Emmys, a male friend e-mailed me to say that when the camera panned on Timothy Olyphant, turned out in a Louis Vuitton peak-lapel tux, “everyone ovulated—including the dudes.” Mention his name to the men in my office and it’s met with sheepish grins and distinctly unmanly gushiness. “Could I love him more?” “He’s just so cool.” Even Graham Yost, the creator of FX’s Justified—the Elmore Leonard–inspired Kentucky crime drama in which Olyphant stars as debonair, shit-kicking U.S. marshal Raylan Givens—will admit to a man crush. “Tim,” he says, “is the whole package.” Olyphant, scratchy voiced and quick to laugh, doesn’t let it go to his head: “I have a crush on Raylan, too!”

The actor’s elegant way with a laconic antihero was established back in 2004, when he played the tortured, mustachioed sheriff Seth Bullock on HBO’s Deadwood. As modern-day lawman Givens, Olyphant brings the same ramrod menace, but cut with a whole lot of smooth southern charm—the type of guy who buys you a drink before he plugs you with a bullet. No wonder dudes swoon.

It took Deadwood to make him a viable leading man, but Olyphant, 43, had already been acting for nearly two decades. So while you might call what he’s having a moment, he’s logged enough time to keep his wits about him. “Success in my line of work brings a great deal of bullshit,” Olyphant says pleasantly. “The upside to doing it for such a long time is that there’s not any kind of confusion about what it is and what it isn’t. When they say, ‘Hey, you want to talk to Access Hollywood?’ I think, No! No, I don’t!” He laughs. “Worst-case scenario, I’ll just keep working.”

Not long after Justified premiered, a friend asked Olyphant if he wasn’t worried about being typecast (after all, both Bullock and Givens wear hats).”I’m thinking: typecast? What, as a badass?” He’ll take it.

Justified Season 3 Begins on FX January 17th

FX opens the new year with the return of the Emmy Award-winning hit drama Justified on January 17, and will continue to run Tuesdays at 10 PM ET/PT.

Starring Timothy Olyphant as “U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens,” Justified is based on the works of crime novelist Elmore Leonard, including Leonard’s short story Fire in the Hole. The end of Season 2 brought about the end of the Bennett family’s hold over Harlan County and the return of Raylan’s old nemesis/friend Boyd Crowder to the criminal life. This season, Boyd and his crew will find they aren’t the only ones making a play to rule the Harlan underworld. Now Raylan finds himself facing off against dirty politics, hidden fortunes, a mysterious man named “Limehouse” and an enterprising and lethal criminal from the Motor City.

Earlier this year, Justified was nominated for four Emmy Awards, with Margo Martindale taking home the statue for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series. Developed by Graham Yost, who also wrote the pilot, Justified is Executive Produced by Yost, Leonard, Fred Golan, Sarah Timberman, Carl Beverly and Michael Dinner, who directed the pilot episode and others. Justified is produced by Sony Pictures Television and FX Productions.
